Islands Accommodation
Lanzarote, the popular holiday
island located in the Canaries, is home to three main tourist resorts and
this is where the majority of visitors book their breaks. But away
from these destinations lies an island that is almost totally unspoiled,
offering lots of options for those in search of a more peaceful rural retreat.

Package tourism used to
dominate on Lanzarote, as elsewhere in Spain. But as more and more
tourists book their own holidays online demand for rural accommodation
has risen amongst independent travelers.
Lanzarote is very well positioned
to meet this, as tourist development has been very carefully controlled,
leaving the bulk of the island largely untouched. Nowhere is this
more evident than in the north, where there are no tourist resorts whatsoever,
just small coastal villages such as Famara and Arrieta which attract locals
and a few in the know visitors.
Various villa companies and
websites
specialize in providing good quality self catering accommodation in these
locations, offering a handful of hand-picked properties in some of the
most beautiful spots on the island. Such in the village of Haria,
which nestles on the floor of the Valley of 1000 Palms, the greenest and
most verdant location on Lanzarote and in total contrast to the rest of
the island, which is volcanic and arid. |
Haria is located about half
an hour’s drive from the airport at Arrecife and a ten minute drive from
the nearest beach at Arrieta. Its apt name is derived from a long
standing local custom, as locals from the village plant a Canarian palm
every time a baby is born here. The result is an amazing, swaying
oasis which provides the ideal backdrop for a relaxing break away from
it all.
Haria is a world away from
the more standardized holiday experience on offer in the main resorts,
boasting an excellent weekly market every Saturday and plenty of
good bars and restaurants where tourists can come into contact with the
'real Lanzarote'. |
