The mansion
of the Marquises of La Quinta Roja, currently hotel "La Quinta Roja", is
an excellent example of the traditional baroque architecture of theCanary
Islands.
It is
located in the actual complex of monuments of La Villa y Puerto de Garachico,
next to the former convent of San Francisco, the house of the Counts of
La Gomera, the city hall and the church of Santa Ana, and is one of the
historical reference points of the entire urban area.
It
owes its name to Cristobal de Ponte y Llanera, the first Marquis of La
Quinta Roja, Knight of the Order of Alcantara, chief constable of Tenerife
and grand master of the military formation of Daute. He was a direct descendant
of Cristóbal de Ponte, a Genoese banker, beneficiary of the advanced
Alonso de Lugo in the distribution of land after the conquest of the island
had been completed. |
| It
was first constructed in the sixteenth century, but was rebuilt in the
mid-seventeenth century, coinciding with King Carlos II granting the title
of Marquis by royal decree. The house was not directly affected by the
volcanic eruption in 1706, which was a key date and turning point in the
history of la Villa; although it was subsequently affected by a fairly
destructive fire.
The
reconstruction work started immediately and seems to have been completed
by October 1709.

This
was the date on which the nuns of the Conceptionist order took refuge in
the House of the Marquis of La Quinta Roja, their protector. Once their
new convent was finished in 1749, they moved into it after spending forty
years living in a section of the house. The house retains its undeniable
monumentality.
Strolling
through the rooms, touching the pilasters and pillars of its pinewood galleries,
listening to the continuous flow of water from the pool in the outdoor
patio from the ancestral right to use one of the few sources from the hilltop,
treading on its stone flooring and pinewood decking and admiring its carved
and painted coffered ceiling, we can imagine the vast amount of historical
experiences that have taken place inside its four walls.
As
a silent witness to the true story of Garachico and therefore, of the historical
process of colonising the Canary Islands and America, the home of the Marquis
of La Quinta Roja appears as an ancestral legacy from days gone by, where
you can just make out the reflection of periods of greater glory and greatness,
moments of spiritual refuge in the cloisters, effervescent periods stirred
up by quarrelling that we imagine around a port that traded spices and
gold with the Indies, fabrics and malvasia grape with Europe and slaves
with Africa, the fear at the sight of the sails of the pirates under the
echo of the guns of the fortress of San Miguel, the desolation in light
of the fire and misfortunes.
The
fact it survived the volcano in 1706 gives us an idea of the first-class
civil and autochthonous architecture of the Canary Islands and a commitment
to its restoration and rehabilitation as a reference for our depleted assets.
Combining full respect for
the history and structure of the house, installing the facilities and providing
hotel-style comfort was the most fascinating part of the restoration work.
