The
Basque
Country (Basque: Euskal Herria, Spanish: País Vasco, is a cultural
region in the western Pyrenees that spans the border between France and
Spain, along the Atlantic coast. In the Basque nationalist conception,
it comprises the autonomous communities of the Basque Country and Navarre
in Spain and then the Northern Basque Country in France. These limits are
based on historical borders, and do not correspond exactly to any cultural
area.
The
region is famous for the modern architecture of the Guggenheim Museum
in Bilbao. Designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, built
by Ferrovial. It is located alongside the Nervion River, which runs through
the city of Bilbao to the Atlantic Coast. The Guggenheim is one of several
museums belonging to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The museum features
permanent and visiting exhibits of works by Spanish and international artists.
On the subject of Gehry,
there is also a fascinating hotel designed by this award-winning architect.
